The craving that showed up before dinner did
Not quite hungry. Not quite not. The best snack evenings start exactly like this.
Maya got home and put her bag down. Sam was already on the sofa, music playing softly, the day clearly done with both of them. The house was quiet in that specific way; it gets around 6, not empty, just settled.
Neither of them was hungry exactly. But neither of them was not.
“Do you want something to eat?” Maya asked, already moving toward the kitchen. Sam did not hesitate. “Something quick.”
She opened the freezer. A few Rajbhog Foods’ boxes were stacked neatly at the back: Corn Kachori, Lilva Kachori, Paneer Tikka Samosa, and a couple of others. They had started keeping them around a few months ago for exactly this kind of evening. The kind that does not announce itself. The kind that needs something warm on a plate.
She pulled out three boxes, turned the oven on, and that was the whole plan.
What came out of the oven
Corn Kachori
Corn Kachori went first. Sweet and savory at once, the filling is soft, and the shell is properly crisp. The kind of bite that makes you pause for a second before reaching for another.
Lilva Kachori was different in the best way. Deeper and more traditional, with a flavor that feels like it belongs at a festive table. Maya had one and then quietly took another before Sam noticed.
Coconut Pattice was the surprise of the evening. Gentle sweetness, a smooth filling, and a crisp outside that held everything together. Sam, who claimed he was not a sweets person, had two.
Cashew Roll brought something richer. Nutty, indulgent, and a little different from the rest, it gave the plate a depth it would not have had otherwise.
Moong Dal Kachori was the one that kept drawing them back. Hearty, bold, and satisfying in that uncomplicated way that good Indian snacks always manage. It disappeared faster than either of them expected.
And then the Paneer Tikka Samosa, spiced just right and filled generously inside a golden crust. Sam picked one up, took a bite, and said without looking up, “This might be our permanent freezer item.”
Maya laughed. He was not wrong.
What made the evening
By the time the plate was half empty, the conversation had picked up on its own. Stories from the day. Plans for the weekend. Nothing important, just the easy kind of talk that needs a reason to start, and food is always a good one.
That is what a well-stocked freezer actually gives you. Not just convenience, but a way into evenings like this, unplanned, unhurried, and better than anything you could have scheduled.
The plates were cleared without any fuss. The music kept playing. Outside, the city carried on. Inside, everything felt exactly right.
