A Drive He Thought Would Be Like Every Other Year
Mehul glanced at the clock as he left Philadelphia early Saturday morning.
Work had kept him busy for months, and visits home to New Jersey had become less frequent than he liked. Calls with his parents were shorter. Conversations with his sister, Rakul, often ended with, “We will catch up properly next week.”
Still, one thing never changed.
He never missed the Raksha Bandhan celebration.
This year, he expected the usual family celebration. His mother would prepare lunch, Rakul would tie the Rakhi, they would exchange gifts, enjoy a few Raksha Bandhan sweets, and spend the afternoon talking before he drove back.
He had no idea everyone else had a different plan.
"Dessert Can Wait"
The morning began just as he expected.
Rakul tied the Rakhi, the family laughed over old jokes, and everyone sat down for lunch.
Afterward, Mehul looked toward the kitchen.
“So… where are the Raksha Bandhan sweets?”
His mother smiled.
“Not yet.”
“Not yet?”
His father laughed.
“Today, dessert has one condition.”
Rakul placed six covered bowls on the table.
“We are playing a game.”
Mehul looked confused.
“A game?”
“The rules are simple,” Rakul said. “Each person picks one bowl. Whatever sweet dish is inside, you have to share one memory connected to it.”
“So, this is the famous Rakhi surprise?” Mehul asked.
“You will find out,” Rakul replied with a grin.
Every Sweet Had a Story
Their father picked the first bowl.
Inside was Kesari Peda.
He smiled immediately.
“This takes me back.”
He told the children how every Raksha Bandhan celebration during their childhood ended with a stop at the neighborhood sweet shop after visiting the temple.
“It never felt complete without Kesari Peda.”
“It still does not,” Rakul smiled.
Next came Milk Cake Burfi.
Their mother laughed before saying a word.
“Mehul, do you remember secretly giving your piece to Rakul because she always finished hers first?”
Rakul looked surprised.
“You actually did that?”
Mehul shrugged.
“You cried over an Indian sweet once. I was trying to avoid another argument.”
The room burst into shared laughter.
“So, you have always been the dramatic one,” Mehul teased.
“I prefer emotionally expressive,” Rakul replied.
Even after all these years, those childhood stories still made everyone laugh.
The Bowl Nobody Expected
Rakul reached for the next bowl.
She did not even have to think.
“I know this one.”
She looked at Mehul.
“You accepted Rakhi from both our neighbors one year.”
Their father laughed so hard he nearly spilled his tea.
“Because both promised him extra sweets!”
“It was a smart business decision,” Mehul defended himself.
“A very profitable Raksha Bandhan celebration,” Rakul replied.
Even the children listening nearby could not stop laughing.
The next bowl revealed Kaju Katli.
“I remember hiding an entire box inside my school bag,” Rakul admitted.
“You never found it.”
“I did,” Mehul smiled.
“I just pretended I did not.”
Their mother shook her head.
“You two were impossible.”
“But somehow,” their father added, “you never stopped looking out for each other.”
That was the beauty of every Raksha Bandhan celebration.
No matter how much a sister and brother argued, they always found their way back.
The Surprise Nobody Saw Coming
Only two bowls remained.
Then Gulab Jamun.
Their father picked Rasgula.
“Every family photograph from Raksha Bandhan somehow included someone trying to eat these before lunch was over.”
Everyone laughed.
Finally, Rakul uncovered the last bowl.
Gulab Jamun.
Instead of saying anything, she quietly walked to a nearby cabinet and returned with a wrapped frame.
She handed it to Mehul.
“What is this?”
“Open it.”
Inside was a collage of family photographs.
Every Raksha Bandhan celebration they could remember was there.
Photos from childhood.
School days.
College.
Their first years in America.
Family vacations.
Even blurry pictures that somehow became everyone’s favorites.
Only one space remained empty.
At the bottom, a small note read:
"Reserved for today's photo."
Mehul looked up.
“You planned all this?”
Rakul smiled.
“I knew work had kept you away this year. I did not want another Raksha Bandhan celebration to become just another visit home.”
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Their mother quietly placed the Gulab Jamun on everyone’s plate.
“Some memories deserve a special sweet.”
Beyond Tradition
Before leaving that evening, Mehul placed the framed collage carefully in his car.
“This is coming home with me.”
Rakul smiled.
Some Raksha Bandhan celebrations become stories that are told again and again.
And sometimes, the sweetest surprise is not the gift waiting on the table.
It is realizing that no matter how busy life becomes, the people who matter most always find a way back to one another.
